The Rio Gourmet

Due to the strong Brazilian currency in the last 3-4 years, eating out in Rio can be an expensive endeavor; at the fancier restaurants main courses could exceed 45-55 Euro (US $ 65-80). A bottle of mineral water or soft drink costs 3-5 Euros, domestic beer or draft are about 3 - 5 Euros. Expect to spend anywhere from 7 to 12 Euros per person at any budget restaurant and snack bar, and anywhere from 40 to 60 Euros at upscale restaurants. If you make the effort and order a bottle of imported wine or champagne, an appetizer, a salad, an entrée and dessert, you might be looking at 80 Euros and up. Printed menus are displayed outside the restaurants to help you make your decision.

The typical Brazilian restaurant, Churrascaria, offers a unique experience to all carnivores. There is a varied and rich buffet with many different side dishes from which to choose. Diverse meats arrive on the spit directly to the table and are cut fresh. One can find Churrascarias in almost every street and at any price. Most of them charge a flat rate, some charge by the pound.


If you stay longer in Rio, you will learn quickly its best spots. For the short-term visitors, we recommend to try Carretao, Marius, and Porcao Rio's (Flamengo)

"A quilo" - meaning "per kilo" is a very popular option for restaurants in Brazil, especially for lunch. Such restaurants can be found on almost every commercial street offering from modest to very rich buffets. You pay depending on the weight you have consumed. These restaurants are also a good option for vegetarians - a large offer of salads, vegetables and fruits.
"Frontera" is considered one of the best restaurants of this kind - the best buffet and a variety of cooked meals, which change every day. "Frontera" can be found in Ipanema, Copacabana, Leblon besides other non touristic areas.

Along the Copacabana promenade, there are many outdoor restaurants that offer international cuisine menus. Only few of them offer something more special than the usual meals, known in Europe or N. America. Don Camilo is among the best options on the Copacabana beach strip. "Manuel & Joaquim" and "Sindicato de Chopp" are very popular and usualy always full local restaurants


If you are looking for upscale restaurants, you will find them mostly in Ipanema and Leblon. Please have a look at our recommendation list TOP10. Those restaurants are very elegant and on the expensive side. Treating yourself to an occasion, or just dressing up and feasting on a delicious and fine meal is worth every penny. The attire does not have to be very formal, but avoid short pants and flip-flops.
